Thank you to all our volunteers, supporters and families who came out to our Phase III Ground Breaking Ceremony on May 27, 2019! This ground breaking marks the start of our largest build season to date. By the end of Phase III, we’ll have finished nine new homes to complete our Leacross Landing Development.
Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson and Ottawa-Orléans MPP Marie-France Lalonde welcomed the crowd with words of support for our Orléans development. As well, future Habitat Homeowners, Isabelle and Abdi, both spoke about their excitement partnering with Habitat Greater Ottawa and how they got to this moment.
“Every family you see here has had their ups and their downs, and for many of us it was a lot of downs. But today this is an up, a big up. This is the up that I need to help build the life that my son deserves. This is also a chance for me as an individual to feel whole again,” said Isabelle. “I am so excited to see shovels in the ground, to watch the walls go up, and to be able to say I got to help build my own home with so many people that care enough to give back.”
“We fled from a civil war to seek a better life here in Canada and though coming to Canada was definitely a better life we have lived in housing for 25 years and struggled with harsh living standards and an extremely unsafe neighbourhood,” said Abdi. “So to now be accepted by Habitat for Humanity to give us this offer to own our own home is truly a dream come true.”
