When Ousmane and Bibata moved to Canada, they came with a vision for the life they wanted to build: new opportunities, a place to grow, and a bright, stable future for their family.

Ousmane first immigrated to Canada in 2015 to seek a better quality of life and to build a future family. After getting married in their home country in 2021, Ousmane and Bibata returned to Canada together in 2022.

Like many Canadians, as Ousmane and Bibata began their family together, they faced challenges related to housing. Their rental home lacks sufficient space for themselves and their daughter, is in a noisy neighbourhood, and has had plumbing issues and cockroach infestations. Struggling to keep up with the rising cost of living, they were living paycheck to paycheck, with no real way to build substantial savings for a down payment.

Still, they dreamed of one day purchasing their own home. Ousmane was inspired by his brother who lives in the US and has already become a homeowner himself. He saw how homeownership can open the door to a better quality of life and wanted to make it a reality for his family.

“A home means first and foremost financial stability, and the prospect of no longer stressing about paying rent at the end of every month. It means leaving a legacy for our child and, for us, an opportunity to pursue other equally important projects, such as going back to school,” Ousmane shares.

This vision is what brought Ousmane and Bibata to Habitat for Humanity Greater Ottawa’s Affordable Homeownership Program. Through the program, Habitat helps make homeownership more attainable while giving future homeowners the opportunity to build equity and create greater housing stability for themselves and their families.

Now, Ousmane and Bibata are looking forward to achieving other important goals, such as pursuing further education and purchasing a new vehicle. They are envisioning a bright future for their daughter, where she has a peaceful environment to focus on her studies and pursue her dreams. They also look forward to collaborating with Habitat for Humanity to give back to their community.

“We wish to partner with Habitat not only for the opportunity to become first-time homeowners but also to actively volunteer and contribute to Habitat’s mission,” says Ousmane.

Affordable homeownership gives people the stability and foundation to support their families and pursue their dreams while also building stronger, healthier communities.

A brighter future starts with a home.
