For as long as I can remember, it’s been just Jack and me. His dad wasn’t in the picture for long, but Jack and I make a great team.
We’ve had to move a lot in Jack’s short life. It was so hard for me to find affordable housing in safe neighborhoods with good schools. In one apartment we ended up living with insects for six months before we were forced to move because of the landlord’s neglect. Right now we’re living in a great school district but the rent is at 60% of my income and the landlord wants to increase it by nearly 5% this year. All I can afford is a small apartment on a busy street, and Jack has nowhere to play outside. I woke up every morning terrified that we we’re one financial disaster away from losing our home, until I discovered Habitat.
I heard about the program through a co-worker and decided to take a leap of faith and apply. I still can’t believe I’m going to own a home. My family lives in Peterborough, so being a single mom and completing my volunteer hours has been challenging, but they’ve been an amazing support. In fact, it’s because of them I was able to complete my 350 volunteer hours. Both my parents and my stepmother took weeks off work to come to Ottawa and volunteer with me. We spent time stocking shelves in the ReStore and insulating the walls of my new home.
I’m excited that Jack will get to grow up in a community of Habitat families, that I can let him go outside and play with all the other kids knowing he is in a safe neighborhood. My dream of sending Jack to university is actually going to become a reality, and maybe we can even go on a trip (the poor kid’s only ever been to Peterborough!). I want him to experience the world and see life from different cultural perspectives.
I’ve met some amazing volunteers through my journey, they made me feel like family from day one. I can’t thank them enough for their dedication to this cause.
For anyone struggling to pay rent, feeling like you’re never going to get out, please consider Habitat. It’s a lot of hard work but so worth it knowing that your mortgage will always be affordable and that your home will be in a safe neighborhood.
