Habitat Greater Ottawa currently has two positions open on its construction team:

Director of Construction

PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Director of Construction’s role is to oversee the entire build process from land acquisition to design to permits and inspections. These tasks will include all pre‐build planning as well as post‐build documentation and warranty/deficiencies work. They will also play a lead role in the relationship building with partners and vendors, acquisition and scheduling of materials and Gift‐in‐Kind. The Director of Construction manages the daily details and work breakdown structure of all new residential build projects.

REPORTS TO:  CEO

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Land Acquisition

  • In conjunction with the Land Committee examine the affiliates’ geographical service area for appropriate and viable target neighborhoods/outlying communities in which the affiliate could build/renovate
  • Ensure there is a sufficient bank of usable land for future builds
  • Seek the advice of experts, as necessary, to carry out evaluations and studies
  • Lead condominium creation and registration

Project Planning and Management

  • Ensure construction is completed in accordance with municipal building codes, by‐laws, municipal, provincial and
    federal statutory requirements, and Habitat Greater Ottawa’s home building standards
  • During the non‐build season, prepare build manuals and guidelines; create a detailed work back schedule for
    upcoming builds; coordinate professional trades, material acquisition and gifts‐in‐kind (GIK)
  • Secure material and service quotes, all required GIK; ensure material and services provided by local and national
    suppliers are ordered and available on‐site in accordance with the construction schedule
  • Establish task forces to assist with GIK or other construction needs as required
  • Review all warranty and Tarion related materials to ensure that all necessary warranty work is completed.
  • Manage and coordinate the team of professional consultants during project planning, development and design
    stages to ensure compliance with Habitat Greater Ottawa’s interests and vision
  • Work with Community Engagement Coordinator to identify needed skills and requirements to align with the work
    back schedule
  • Work with Family Services Manager to ensure that future homeowners complete all program requirements re:
    construction of their homes and post‐occupancy deficiencies
  • Support Fundraising and Communication departments to ensure appropriate recognition is being provided to GIK donors and sponsors

Construction Coordination and Supervision 

  • Develop and oversee Habitat Greater Ottawa’s build schedule including pre‐build, build, post‐build and warranty
  • Create budget estimates, monitor construction progress against the established schedules and budgets and prepare reports and recovery mitigation plans
  • Provide construction oversight and ensure construction stays on schedule through management of the Site Supervisor(s)
  • Ensure Senior Site Supervisor is having inspections conducted pursuant to municipal, provincial and federal requirements
  • Ensure the construction schedule and deadlines are met in a timely manner throughout the construction process
  • Take appropriate action to deal with the results of delays, bad weather or emergencies on the construction site and communicate recovery plans to operations team

Volunteer and Safety Management

  • In coordination with the Site Supervisor(s) be responsible for the supervision, training (in‐house where possible), and coordination of all on‐site volunteers
  • In coordination with the Site Supervisor(s) determine which build tasks are not suitable for volunteers and secure the services of the appropriate professionals or individuals to perform these tasks.
  • In coordination with the Volunteer Coordinator, organize safety training and other skill based training for volunteers and deliver daily safety training on the build site.
  • Identify, help recruit, train and provide leadership for Crew Leaders.

Material Management

  • Supervise the safeguarding and maintenance of a comprehensive inventory of Habitat Greater Ottawa’s construction tools, supplies and equipment; monitor compliance of power tools with safety regulations
  • Ensure all on‐site materials, supplies, tools and equipment are adequately supervised and stored in a safe and secure manner

Volunteer and Safety Management

  • In coordination with the Site Supervisor(s) be responsible for the supervision, training (in‐house where possible), and coordination of all on‐site volunteers
  • In coordination with the Site Supervisor(s) determine which build tasks are not suitable for volunteers and secure the services of the appropriate professionals or individuals to perform these tasks
  • In coordination with the Community Engagement Coordinator, organize safety training and other skills‐based training for volunteers and deliver daily safety training on the build site
  • Identify, help recruit, train and provide leadership for Crew Leaders

Employee Management

  • Supervise, coordinate and provide direction to the Construction Site Supervisor(s)
  • Support employees in the efforts to upgrade existing skills and ensure OH&S training requirements are kept up to date

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 7 years of experience in the construction of single family homes, townhomes and/or stacked town homes
  •  Minimum 7 years of experience in construction Project Management
  • Experience managing and training construction site staff, volunteers and skilled trades
  • Experience working with City of Ottawa planning, by‐law, zoning and permit processes
  • Knowledge of the building code and construction standards, developments and best practices
  • Ability to manage multiple build site locations, construction build scheduling and material procurement needs
  • Ability to establish excellent working relationships with staff and volunteers as well as with construction suppliers to procure GIK material donations
  • Maintain up‐to‐date training and qualifications related to regulation Health & Safety requirements
  • High attention to detail, excellent multi‐tasking and problem solving skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency with MS Office, Excel, Microsoft Project and project management software

Site Supervisor

This position offers an exceptional opportunity to develop professionally and contribute to an organization with a recognizable, trusted brand and solid reputation. This position will be of interest to persons who have on-site working experience performing various construction disciplines, i.e., framing, drywall, insulation, painting, trim carpentry, siding, etc., and would like to teach those skills to volunteer groups under the direction of the Senior Site Supervisor. As part of a growing, supportive and extremely collaborative team, the Site Supervisor will believe in Habitat Greater Ottawa’s vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to call home.

PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Site Supervisor’s role is to assist the Senior Site Supervisor by supporting construction and administrative aspects of our build projects. The position also assists the ReStore by procuring merchandise through salvage operations approximately one day per week. This merchandise is sold in our ReStores to raise funds and contribute to Habitat Greater Ottawa’s charitable mission.

Reports to: Director of Construction and Director of ReStores

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Construction Support

  • Under the direction of the Site Supervisor, lead Crew Leaders and volunteers in carrying out Habitat for Humanity build projects

Project Planning and Control

  • Assist with local Gift-in-Kind (GIK) procurement and GIK orders from Habitat for Humanity Canada
  • Support Fundraising and Communication departments to ensure appropriate recognition is being provided to GIK donors and sponsors
  • Support Senior Site Supervisor and Family Services Manager to address post-build deficiencies for previous builds

Construction Coordination and Material Management

  • Assist with securing material and service quotes; ensures material and services provided by local and national
    suppliers are ordered and available on-site in accordance with the construction schedule
  • Assist the Senior Site Supervisor in on-site daily construction activities, supervision & coordination of volunteers
  • Assist with daily material and tool rental pick-up and delivery to the build site
  • Help maintain a comprehensive inventory of Habitat GO’s construction tools, supplies and equipment; organization of on-site and external tool storage areas
  • Ensure all tools and equipment are maintained and in good repair as required; monitor compliance of power tools with safety regulations
  • Ensure all on-site materials, supplies tools and equipment are adequately supervised and stored in a safe and secure manner

Volunteer and Safety Management

  • In collaboration with the Senior Site Supervisor, daily due diligence and monitoring of on-site health, safety, environmental conditions and potential hazards
  • Assist with the coordination of all on-site volunteers and greeting all Habitat Build Day teams
  • Other tasks related to volunteer and safety management

ReStore Salvage Crew Lead

  • Manage inventory and storage of salvage tools and equipment. Load and prepare material on Salvage Truck.
  • Drive Salvage Truck and transport equipment and material to and from jobsites.
  • Salvage items from donors’ homes during renovations and demolitions. Primarily cabinetry.
  • Lead volunteer crew members onsite. Coordinate volunteers and notify the team of upcoming projects.
  • Cooperate with Product Specialist to meet the needs of donors and contractors.
  • Communicate with Donors and Contractors on-site.
  • Itemize and record salvaged materials for tracking purposes.
  • Direct loading and unloading salvaged material from donors’ homes to ReStore vehicles to ReStore.
  • Assist in set-up and display of salvaged cabinetry at ReStore locations.
  • Ensure compliance with all Health and Safety regulations and Habitat Greater Ottawa safety standards.
  • Attend salvage volunteer orientation sessions.\

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum five years’ construction experience
  • Ability to establish excellent working relationships with staff and volunteers as well as with construction suppliers
  • Must maintain up-to-date training and qualifications related to regulation Health & Safety requirements.
  • High attention to detail and excellent multi tasking and problem solving skills.
  • G license
  • Clean driving record
  • Understanding of the Habitat for Humanity philosophy and the desire to promote it
  • Previous experience with home renovations or skilled trades
  • Previous supervisory experience
  • Ability to work with a team
  • Ability to effectively communicate with donors, Habitat GO staff members and volunteers
  • Ability to lift and unload heavy items
  • Proficiency with Excel
  • Condo experience an asset
