Family day is just around the corner (literally) and you’re not sure how to plan out the free time.
The holiday may be long over, but your wallet still hasn’t fully forgiven you yet.
It’s okay – most Canadian families are right there with you.
That’s why we’ve put together this list of 5 family activities you can do this weekend in Ottawa for free!
- Rideau Canal Skateway
Okay – it may be a bit of a cliché thing to do if you’ve been around Ottawa a while. But it’s FREE! And there are Beavertails… Grab your skates, bundle up and hit the 7.8km of world’s largest skating rink! Don’t have skates? No Problem – they have rentals all over. Kids too young to lace up? Grab a sleigh and get those legs going!!
- Visit Winterlude
Check out the spectacular snow-playground at Snowflake Kingdom, the snow-sculptures of the Winter Garden, the sparkles of the Ice Carving Competitions, and more! Most festival activities are totally free and have a TON of interactive displays. This is a great place to take the kids if its not -40 outside.
- Check Out Some Museums – for free!
Yes, that’s right. For free. If you’re an Ottawa resident and own an Ottawa Public Library card, check out the Museum Privilege Program. The Library loans out family passes to several museums – all at no charge. Give it a try, that’s why they’re there.
- Go Tobogganing
Burn off some energy! The National Capital Commission (NCC) recommends the following three snow hills as some of the best in the region. Both Bruce Pit & Conroy Pit offer hills, both doubling as off-leash dog parks and Conroy offering a ‘lit hill’ (meaning it will be illuminated) between 4PM and 11PM. The Green’s Creek hills are also lit in the evenings as well as maintained by the city.
- Make Some Maple Memories
Get your sugar on! At Fulton’s Pancake House & Sugar Bush, you can learn the history behind maple syrup while tasting some of that Pancake House goodness. Fill yourselves up on everything from bacon and pancakes to some seriously fresh syrup on snow. After do anything from self-guided hiking tours to snowshoeing to Trail Games and more. With FREE admission, everyone will definitely get tuckered out.
